You probably know that Monserrate is a must-do in Bogotá. But, instead of going to see it and taking pictures just because, what about giving yourself the chance to immerse in this citizens’ sanctuary with its official walking tour?
Once you have met our tour guide and the rest of the group, this hour-and-half tour will start. First, he will explain to you how Monserrate became a place of pilgrimage and how, over time, it also became a tourist place due to its outstanding viewpoints of Bogotá and a hiking destination or a workout zone for those who are into exercising.
We assure you this will be a whole different way of visiting it. If you fall in love with this important hill, you can ask about our other tour there: Birdwatching at Monserrate.
Meeting Point: Find us on the base of the mountain just next to the ticket office. Just look for the yellow umbrella to start the Monserrate Shared tour!
Starting time: Every Monday,Tuesday Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10:00am and 5:00pm
You will walk along the Stations of the Cross Path (Via Crucis) while you learn more about our characteristic flora and fauna. You will be part of the wishing well tradition of flipping coins and making wishes (a tradition that has been there for decades) by flipping your own coin.
Afterwards you will be able to stop in the viewpoint where photos of the imposing views of the city will be taken. You will get to know all the superstitions, sayings and interesting though most of the times unknown facts about the hill.
You will walk inside the Basilica of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate to understand the importance of Catholicism for Colombians’ identity. We assure you this will be a whole different way of visiting such a touristic place.
If you want to walk up the hill, you can do it with no problem. Keep in mind the trail is 3.2-mile long (both ways) and it takes approximately 4 hours to complete by foot.
Taking the funicular takes just 7 minutes. The distance you cover going up this way is 880 m (2887 ft).
