Have you ever imagined that a river could have five colors? In this 3-day trip you will see how real this place is. You will fly first to La Macarena, a Colombian department in the east, where our local guide will be waiting for you with an adventure specially designed for each day. You will navigate on the Guayabero river, trek among nature to
Caño Cristales and the other surrounding rivers and viewpoints of the ranges, waterfalls and streams. And, of course, you will get to meet local people and taste typical flavors of this unique region.
When talking about paradise like places, we could take Caño Cristales as an example of it. Located within Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park, and in the eastern region of Colombia known as los Llanos Orientales (the Eastern Plains). These crystal-clear waters that burst colors naturally because of an endemic aquatic plant.
Although you can travel there all year long, we recommend going between July and November, when the riverbed grows and colors in the river are at its best time. If you leave Caño Cristales wanting to explore more unique geographic spots, our 4-day tour of the Lost City Trek in La Sierra Nevada Natural Park may be the next trip on your list.
Our trip starts by flying to La Macarena airport where our local guide will pick you up and accommodate you in the hotel. Once there you will be taken to some of the brooks and streams that are also part of the natural park. You will have lunch and dinner near the town, and you will take rest for day two.
Prepare yourself for the adventure as you will be navigating across Guayabero river and then driving to the starting point of the trekking to Caño Cristales. Once in the river you will have time enough to mesmerize at its beauty and connect with nature. You will have lunch on your way back and the day will finish with a Parrando Llanero, a cultural and gastronomic exhibition of the region with music and locals.
We don’t want you to miss anything, so on the last day you will visit some other rivers of the park and you will be able to walk around it. By the end of this tour, you will not only know more about the social importance of this place, but you will also understand why Caño Cristales is undoubtedly one of the most important natural treasures of Colombia and perhaps of the world.
Please bring comfortable clothes, waterproof hiking footwear and a cane if you need it. Bring a light bag, you will be walking with it. You won’t be able to wear insect repellent or sunscreen, as Caño Cristales is choosing to carry out ecological tourism actions.
We recommend going between July and November, when the riverbed grows and colors in the river are at its best time. The region's rainy season happen during these months, which provides the right conditions for the ecosystem to amaze you with its paradisiacal beauty.
