In this journey you will not find the city of legend, but a place rich with colonial history and indigenous mythologies. We are unsure it ever existed, but stories are meant to be told and we want to share this one with you!
In this trip, the day begins when the guide picks you up in the hotel. He and the driver will take you across the city heading north to New Guatavita town. After a two-hour drive from busy Bogota, you will get to the first stop in the town. Here, with the views of Tominé reservoir you will hear the story of how come there is a town submerged beneath and why it was flooded.
Venture afterwards to the mystic Lake Guatavita. To discover what this unique ecosystem has to offer there is a short hike to the lake you will have to accomplish. On the shores of the lake, you will hear the old indigenous traditions that gave this lake its renown and the possible reasons behind the wonderous legend. You’ll find a place rich with colonial history and indigenous mythologies.
Once the guided tour at the lake finishes, you will be able to choose enjoying a traditional lunch with a wonderful view of the neighboring water reservoir before visiting the town’s artisanal market.
Finally take in one last look and we’ll be on our way back to Bogotá. You will call it day when the driver and the guide drop you off in your hotel again.
The maximum temperature in the village of Guatavita is 14°C (57°F). We recommend you wear comfortable clothes, shoes for walking, and a warm jacket as the lake itself is colder.
Lake Guatavita is closed on Mondays, except when Monday is a holiday. On those cases, the Lake is closed on Tuesday.
Keep in mind this tour requires a moderate physical fitness level. The activity requires climbing 150 steps up. Please tell the guide if there is any health condition our team should know of.
